University College of Medical sciences (UCMS Delhi)
University College of Medical sciences, Delhi appeared in the year 1971 as a constituent college of DU (Delhi University). This college offers both medical and paramedical courses to the students. It has 150 seats for MBBS and 71 seats for MD/MS aspirants. Apart from basic medical courses, it also has PhD programmes for every medical specialty. In the paramedical department it has courses namely B.sc in medical technology, Diploma in nursing, Radiography and medical laboratory training.
Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is the associate hospital of University College of Medical sciences with more than 1000 beds. Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is one of the major sources of health care for the people of East Delhi and of outskirts areas. Since past many years, this college is delivering excellent results and students are performing well in extracurricular activities too.
Library of University College of Medical sciences consists of 17 departmental libraries with one central library, which facilitates teaching, research and extension programmes. The Central library is well equipped with modern infrastructure full with latest books, huge amount of journals, WHO publications, high-speed internet connection and CD ROMs. Library tries hard to provide the best environment with latest, precise and timely valuable information to the students.
The establishment of College of Medical Sciences is a result of the efforts put by the Health minister of India of that time. Health ministry planned to offer medical education to each student who wishes to become a doctor and meets the eligibility criteria because even with the presence of two medical colleges in the town more than 100 students have to leave the dream to become a doctor. In 1971, when University College of Medical sciences commence its first class, it was in the Department of Chemistry, DU. Students of that time needs to do their internship program at Meerat Medical College and later it was shifted to Safadjung Hospital.
