Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi

Varanasi is the oldest city in the entire world famous for its Ayurvedic vaccination. Medical education in Varanasi started from the days of 500 B.C. In fact, medical education started from this city itself. In the year 1920, BHU establishes medical education in the university by creating a separate department of Ayurveda under Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology. Soon the Ayurveda department was established to prepare medicine, teach Ayurvedic methods to its students, and make Ayurvedic treatment available to public at a reasonable price. Later on 19 January 1924, Maharaja Sir Prabhu Narayan Singhji laid the foundation stone of the Ayurvedic Hospital.

In the year 1960, Ayurvedic College was converted into college of Medical Sciences. Professor K.N. Uduppa was the first principal of the college. At the time when Institute of Medical Sciences newly came into medical education, it was having 10 departments, nine in modern machine and one in Indian medicine. In 1963, Medical Council of India and General Medical Council, U.K. recognized MBBS training. After 3 years of establishment of medical college, PG program in the college also started after taking approval from President of India who was a frequent visitor of BHU. In 1971, college of Medical Sciences was upgraded to Institute of Medical Sciences.

In the year 1976, medical institute showed further growth in PG education with the approval of DM and MCh courses with 10 specialties. Further management decided to divide Ayurveda and medicine department to make possible their individual growth.
