Christian Medical College was the first medical school created mainly for women of the country. It was the first instance when a medical college was build only for women in entire Asia. Dame Edith Mary Brown founded it. The government in 1915 officially accepted it. The Greenfield sisters, Martha Rose and Kay, started the medical missionary work in Ludhiana in the year 1881. Both the sisters are great educationalist from Scotland. The medical work of Greenfield sisters is unforgettable simply because of their efforts.
From 1894 to 1952, Christian Medical College has seen multiple landmarks from being a School of medicine to Christian Women’s Medical College up to 1952. In the year 1952, the name of the college was changed to Christian Medical College, which enables both men and women to take admission under MBBS course. This change came into effect from 1953 when any gender can take admission in the college instead of just women. At the start, the college was under affiliation of Punjab University. However, from 1999 the afflation was shifted to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Punjab. Medical Council of India recognizes the Christian Medical College.
Since the college started admitting both genders, more than 2000 candidates have graduated from this college. Today, these graduates are serving is every part of the country and even in abroad. Christian Medical College is very close from Ludhiana Railway Station and has a large campus. The college provides residential facility to staff, hostels for nursing, paramedical and medical students for both men and women. The hospital has 775 beds for the patients who came here for treatment from outskirts of Ludhiana.
The paramedical and teaching staffs are nearly from every part of the country. Central and state government has always stands strong for supports in work and development of college and the associate hospital.
