Viceroy Charles Hardinge inaugurated Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi in the year 1914. His wife Lady Hardinge laid the foundation stone of the college. Lady Hardinge wife of Charles Hardinge was the first one to think of initiating a medical college only for women. The idea behind such thought is because study medicine for women in India was impossible. There was lack of facility and infrastructure, which forces women of India not to take medicine as a career option.
It was unfortunate that the great woman died later on the same year. Queen Mary suggested the college and the hospital to name it after Lady Hardinge as a tribute of its founder. Dr. Kate Platt was the first principal of the college. The college started well under his great control and guidance. Lady Hardinge Medical College is located at Connaught place, New Delhi. Hospital cum medical college is one of the oldest institutes of the country and it is easy to reach at exigency time.
Lady Hardinge Medical College is affiliated under Delhi University. Soon after the inception as a medical college, the demand among aspirants was boosting up. At the start, it was affiliate with Punjab University and in the year 1956, it has taken affiliation with Delhi University. When Lady Hardinge Medical College started, they offer PG courses only to female candidates. However, since 1970 it started to provide enrollment to both males and females for various PG courses.
Lady Hardinge Medical College offers 5.5 years MBBS degree. Admission in the college is done on the marks scored in DUMET (Delhi University Medical-Dental Entrance Test). Based on marks scored in DUMET merit list is prepared and admission is offered. As per the government rules some percentage of seats are reserved for backward communities. Candidate wants to appear in DUMET must secure 50% marks in 10+2.
