Chandigarh has always been in top spot when it comes to education. Besides, Punjab University it has numerous engineering college, Arts College, architecture college, number of private or government degree college and other eminent research institutes. Somehow, the city was lacking a medical college for MBBS course. However, after the establishment of Government Medical College, the need of a MBBS college was over. The college provides opportunity to many outstanding students to build career in the field of medicine.
As soon as the medical college establishes in the city the administration created a department of medical education and research. In the year 1991, Temporary affiliation was granted to the college under Punjab University however later in the year 1999, permanent affiliation was granted with 50 seats in MBBS annually.
Admission in Government Medical College, Chandigarh is based on the marks scored on Combined Entrance Test conducted by Punjab University. In the year 1991, Shri Baleshwar Rai started first academic session. The first batch was having a total strength of 50 students and each subsequent year it has the same number of students up to 1996. In January 1996, the first batch of students passed their MBBS final year examination and completed mandatory 12 months internship program in January 1997.
Great number of students from the medical college has secured admissions to PG courses at AIIMS, New Delhi via doing well at All India PG Medical Entrance examination. Students have also performed well at interviews conducted by AFMS (Armed Forces Medical Services), UPSC, and various state levels PSC. Number of students are working as a doctor in abroad mostly in USA with great percentile marks in USMLE examination.
Apart from attaining academic excellence, students of the college have done consistently well at inter college sports and cultural activities. It has 250 teaching staff members who are highly qualified and directly selected through PGI.
