Christian Medical College started in the year 1918 by Dr. Scudder. He started by offering diploma training to women in Licentiate. The first academic session attains hundred percent pass record in the examinations. In the year 1942, this medical training school attains the status of medical college with over 25 students were admitted in MBBS. Male students started taking admission in MBBS from the year 1947. In the year 1950, Christian Medical College got permanent affiliation from University of Madras. From the year 1953, number of students in the colleges was raised from 25 to 50, out of which 25 are male candidates and rest are females. From 1964, the number of students raised to 60.
In the year 1988, affiliation of the college was shifted from the University of Madras to the latest established Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. In the year 2001, NAAC awarded the college with five star status and has given the status of deemed university. Since then, Christian Medical College is conducting their own examination and awarding their own degree and certificate. Graduates from Christian Medical College live in the hospital for providing 24 facility of treatment to its patients. Christian Medical College is also a health care hospital of Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
The administrative body of Christian Medical College Vellore Association manages college cum health care hospital. The Association is registered under Societies registration Act of India and currently has 54 churches and come other Christian Medical Body.
Management of the college also provides financial assistance to the students who come here from financial weak background. Students and the faculty members both lives in a residential society located in campus. Christian Medical College is among the top three medical colleges in the country. The institute offers PG degree courses in the streams like Neurology, Urology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Thoracic Surgery, etc.
