Madras Medical College, Chennai
Madras Medical College is the best-rated medical college from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. On 2 February 1835, Madras Medical College appeared. In the year 1996, the name of the institute renamed to Chennai medical college from Madras Medical College but due to its universal fame, the new name could not stand for long period.
Medical college Kolkata and Madras Medical College, Chennai are the two oldest medical institute of India. The administrative body of state government runs the college and the hospital. In the college, there are more than 84 departments. Every year 80 medals and prices are there for the students in which Johnstone medal is the most popular among them.
The medical college offers undergraduate courses, PG programs, PG diplomas, Super specialization courses to the students willing to be part of the college. Since 1857, the college was affiliated with University of Madras and entire degrees of Health Sciences are awarded by the similar university. In the year 1988, the affiliation of the college was transferred to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. This university started functioning from July 1988.
For a very short span of time, the college functioned as independent university. However, very soon, the status of an independent university was taken over by the government and the college was again affiliated back to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. In the year 1996 when the name of the city changed as Chennai, people of city demanded to change the name of the college as well. However very soon it was again renamed to its older name due to its popularity as Madras Medical College. The general hospital is of great repute and ranks among the top ten in the Indian Subcontinent. Today, the entire hospital is well equipped with medical equipments. In the year 2011, chief minister of the state Dr. Karunanithi renamed the hospital as Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
