The history of Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is quite old. It all started back in 18th century by French government when they established a medical school and it was called Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery. In the year 1956, government of India took over the medical college and since then our government is taking care of it. On 13 July 1964, it was renamed as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
Apart from offering medicinal studies, it also provides health care facilities. JIPMER is an independent body taken care by the ministry of health and family welfare society of India.
The campus is located on the highway in the western entrance of Pondicherry and having a total land of 195 acres. The campus has a post office, shopping center, hostels for boys and girls, Residential facility for administrative staffs, Banks, green trees and plants. The total strength of the college is about 3000. About 300 are experience teachers and 565 resident doctors. JIPMER offers wide range of courses in the field of paramedical and medical. For admission in JIPMER, applicant has to appear in the entrance exam, which is conducted on all India bases, and it is done purely on merit basis.
The R & D center of the college is active in finding suitable medicine for incurable diseases. Research council provides platform to demonstrate research work in a forum. Every year the institute conducts a number of conferences, workshops, seminars and training courses. Multiple universal health organization provides funding to conduct hassle free research work. Residents and faculty staff publishes numerous research papers every year in journals of national and international standard. Very frequently, faculty member wins number of awards and scholarships. JIPMER publishes an international journal of Biomedical Science. Many books which are used to teach medical subjects are been written by the faculty members of JIPMER.
